Hay música que no tiene época, que sin importar en que período de tu vida la escuches siempre será refrescante. Eso pasa con este disco de Ian D Hawgood, música que aunque puede ser enmarcada dentro de ese amplio paquete llamado ambient, está muy distante de simplemente ser catalogada bajo un género y ya. Va mucho más alla de cualquier convencionalismo, va mucho más allá de ciertas modas y eras.

Compared with it’s predecessor “The Fire Will Die At Night” Ian’s new EP comes with a lighter, less dense atmosphere. Soft piano-spots, little melodies from far away and sometimes slightly moving beats find their way to your ear and to your heart. Shifting you back to childhood, when you could enjoy things light-hearted, they flowed to you without any struggle.

Just keep on Spiralling Into Somewhere.

EVENN EP es música tranquila proveniente de un sello que no necesita presentación  y que como ya he explicado antes, está extinto pero fue absorbido por SEM. Bridges buildings, muestra una faceta muy agradable de esa música que puede hacerte bailar, pero que notas a leguas que está hecha para disfrutar. De alguna forma hecha para moverte, pero de una apariencia tan frágil que te sientes culpable de solo pensar hacerlo.

Kyoto digital fue un excelentísimo netlabel afincado en Dinamarca y que lastimosamente ya desapareció. Su funcionamiento era un poco diferente al de otros netlabels, ya que los releases no permanecían disponibles indefinidamente. La página estuvo viva hasta hace un tiempo pero en el momento de redactar esta reseña me di cuenta que ya también desapareció. Bueno, aún es posible encontrar unos cuantos releases en archive.org, los otros toca buscarlos por algún p2p. El disco que reseño hoy de este sello es un ep split entre Xoki a.k.a. Theodor Zox y Hieronymus, ambos miembros muy activos de Kyoto Digital. Sonidos hipnóticos, dub del mejor, para aquellos amantes de rhythm & sound o cualquier cosa hecha por ese grupo de genios llamado Basic channel.

Es también muy recomendable el split album de estos dos artistas que tiene el mismo nombre y bajo la referencia KY_D014. Muy a mi pesar este esfuerzo no se encuentra en archive.org, pero cualquiera que sienta interés en él solo comuniquese conmigo.

“Once again Kyoto awakens to bring you a new release of ultra deep dubbyness. This time its Xoki & Hieronymus who, as on kyoto04, complement each others tracks in a superb way. Starting out is Xoki’s driving and shuffling Cut Down with its economically minded sound aesthetic where everything, even the effects, are reduced to the bare minimum. Next up is the track, Elements, possibly one of the best Hieronymus tracks yet. It carries his signature sound all over the place with reverberated basslines and dubs reminiscent of distant thunder storms with huge clashing walls of effects. It doesn’t get much deeper and more hypnotic then this. Illuminated is as submerged and heavy as Xoki has ever been before. Masses of sound get squashed by an earth-rattling bassline while skanks drop into the mix occasionally to add that final dubwise touch. Sensi City draws heavily on Hieronymus’ roots influences, but still this is light-years away from anything rootsy. Massive bombastic basses bounce over tight zen inducing structures of deep chords and skanks bathed in dirty and broken down sound effects. Welcome to the Dub World Order.”

Qué habría sido del rock si no hubiera aparecido gente interesada en música un tanto diferente, gente que desarrolló un género que revitalizó a otro usando los mismos instrumentos utilizados durante décadas. Qué habría pasado con el rock, género que estaba al borde del abismo, si en los 90 no hubiera surgido el avant-pop o el post-rock; qué habría sucedido si estos visionarios no hubieran tomado sus instrumentos y se hubieran alejado de la mediocridad de tocar los mismos 3 acordes en la que se basó el punk rock, o el virtuosismo desmedido de las tendencias mas pesadas. No se en realidad qué habría sucedido de haber sido otra la historia, pero duermo tranquilo sabiendo que no pasó y que tenemos post rock y avant pop para rato, y que decenas de nuevos géneros y proyectos provenientes de esta vertiente surgen cada día.

“From the relatively obscure town of Shipley in the UK, Johnny Poindexter are a fascinating prospect. Like fellow Yorkshire dwellers Hood their music is both melancholy and highly experimental yet somewhere in between they produce songs which are compelling and original. Using a number of guest vocalists, the results are unsurprisingly varied. ‘We Meet By Accident’ is where their songs first hit home; a collision of grimy post-punk and drone rock reminiscent of Six By Seven’s early work. The title track is similarly styled but even more harrowing; its lyric of “No one gets out alive” convinces on every scale. Make no mistake, this is not a record for the faint hearted; ‘Headswim’ piles on the paranoia and angst whilst beyond the fairy-tale wind chimes of ‘Madeline’ there lurks a chilling message. Crucially Johnny Poindexter reveal a layer of vulnerability on ‘Audrey Tautou’ and ‘G Repeater’ just to prove this isn’t a trawl through goth posturing. Far from it, this is a deep, dark record that should please followers of obscure Factory records whilst the more modern, haunting soundscapes should ensnare a new generation of miserablists”.
